1, 2010 - The Birth Things began rather slowly the night before. All day Faylene nested and
panted but didn’t do anything beyond that. Nothing started until just before
midnight. The first pup arrived at 12:07 a.m., Sept, 1st, right on the due
date. “Bizbee” was 7 oz. It was a bit of a wait for “Chumley” to show up, but
he finally arrived at 3:00 a.m. weighing 8.8 (Big Boy!) Then only 27 minutes
later, little Roxy showed up, all 5.1 ounces of her, just like that! It
seemed as though things were progressing nicely (except for my getting any
sleep, of course!) Then at 5:15 “Will” got stuck in the birth canal, really
stuck. It was very difficult to get him out. Faye just wasn’t pushing, his
sack had broken, and then his cord was unexpectedly severed. With literally
minutes ticking away I worked hard to maneuver my fingers trying to be
careful, but quick and efficient, trying to grasp his forelegs. Finally I got
them and I expected his head to come out without much difficulty. But it
wouldn’t come! I took hold of his scruff and PULLED…. Out he came, gray-blue,
lifeless and not breathing, and I could not find a heartbeat. Desperate to
save him I got to work; Suctioning, giving compressions, giving him breaths,
dipping him in stark cold water, then rubbing him with a very warm towel. RUB-RUB-RUB!
Quick, strong and fast. This
is what you have to do to stimulate an unresponsive puppy. He began to pink
up, but there was still no movement or other sign of life. Then… his chest
lurched. One time. I grabbed my stethoscope and listened… A HEARTBEAT! Slower
than it should be, but THERE! I kept working. Another gasp. For a 1/2 hour I
rubbed and warmed him and slowly but surely his gasps became more and more
frequent, and became more like normal breathing, until finally he whimpered.
But that’s not good enough. In this business the adage “IT’S NOT FUN UNTIL
SOMEBODY CRIES!” applies. And eventually he let out a wonderful cry. I put
him in the warmer (a simple box with a warmed up rice bag and soft blankets
or towels) and let him cry. As he cried he got warm. He cried until he became
the best crier of all, good and worked up, and finally up to temperature. He
was very happy to be placed with his momma and soon learned to suck and got
plenty of milk. He fought hard to live, which is why we named him “Will”. He
weighed in at 7.6 ounces. So, with that behind us, there was only one more
pup. At 6:00 a.m. a 6.8 oz. “Nuggles” arrived without any problem. With
everyone cleaned up, dry and warm, with momma replenished with a tasty
serving of fresh cooked pheasant, cheese, and kibble, I looked into that pen,
embraced by my husband (who was a great help to me when I needed him), and
thought “That was damn scary! But, just look at those amazing babies.” Today,
looking at them all, you’d never know we ever had any trouble at all. |

8, 2010 - 1 Week All the babies are doing wonderful and momma too. They are growing really
fast and getting really chunky. They are very active and so cute. They do
love their Momma,. When she leaves they cry up a storm, and when she comes
back they all wiggle and wriggle until they find their way to her and find a
nipple and nuzzle up all warm and content. They are becoming more and more
used to being picked up and held. By next week their eyes and ears will open
and then the real cuteness begins! It reveals a little more personality and
when they look at you, well, your heart pretty much melts on spot! |

15, 2010 - 2 Weeks Now the pups eyes and ears have opened, and just look at how adorable
they are! They are getting so big, some of them are already walking on all
fours at times. They are all healthy and gaining weight just as they should.
Now that they can see the world they are not so nervous when we pick them up.
They can see who’s been giving them those elevator rides! Each pup has their
own special look but as you can see they are all just beautiful and they’re
all waiting for you to take them home! |

22, 2010 - 3 Weeks These little cuties are growing so fast I can hardly believe my eyes.
They are up on all fours and even starting to play with each other. Their
eyes and ears are wide open to the world now and when we peek into their pen
they peek right back up at us with their sweet little faces. It is fun to see
them recognizing us and responding to our kiss kiss noises. Soon they will be
tumbling around and growling and jumping on the edge of their pen for us to
pick them up! |

29, 2010 - 4
Weeks Well this week was the big move to the main floor of the house into our
living room. This is always a huge
adjustment for the pups and mom. Faye still sometimes thinks she needs to go
upstairs even though she’ll come in from outside, go to the pen, jump in and
sniff her puppies! She’ll still follow me to the gate thinking she should go up there. When the pups are placed into the pen for the first time they stand
frozen in place for a moment kind of in a little daze, taking in the new
smells, the new surroundings, everything. And they are kind of stunned into a
still stupor. Everything new for a puppy is “a situation”. When looking at
them still like that you can literally see the little wheels in their heads
turning as they are thinking “Okay, what we have here is a situation.” It
seems so small to us but for them it is really dramatic. Soon enough though
they get their bearings and their curiosity kicks in and before you know it
they’re like… “Situation? What situation?” It’s forgotten. Until the milk
bowl comes out. Moving down to the living room also means an introduction to
eating independently from Momma and that is, you guessed it, A Situation. A
HUGE one actually. It takes several days, even though they love the taste of
it, to get the pups comfortable with the puppy milk (which is fortified goats
milk just for puppies) enough to drink it on their own. Pretty soon they will
be whining for it and practically climbing in the bowl to slurp it all up. So now that the pups are all settled in they are being very playful and
beginning to notice when we walk up to the pen and actually sometimes whine a
little for attention. They are so cute as you can see by their pictures, which
pretty much says it all! |
